Palo Parado Crossing made "Public" by Board action

In a "special" meeting on Friday, February 29th, the Board of Supervisors, voted unanimously to approve a plan to keep the Palo Parado rail crossing open. In the last month, I had several meetings with area developers, Union Pacific (U.P.) officials, congressional and county staff to find a way to prevent the closure of the   crossing. It came down to this: if the developers constructed a paved road from Pendleton Drive to the western edge of the UP right of way, the county would  make the crossing public, preventing UP from closing it. After several meetings with local developers, our legal staff developed an agreement which our Board approved. Rio Rico Properties will allow the county to use Calle Cavallero for four (4) years as a public access point, the county will contribute equipment and materials to complete a road base of approximately 300 feet and First United will pave the new road base to provide the public with access across the UP tracks. The remaing road, west of the UP right of way will remain "private" until a bridge, currently under design, is completed.

Progress continues on the 1904  Courthouse.
The 1904 Santa Cruz County Courthouse continues to see interior renovation work. The courtroom will be brought back to it's original condition with a $117,500 grant received from Arizona State Parks for architectural restoration.  Restoration of the 1904 courtroom will take several months to complete. The old Courthouse is currently serving as a home for Cochise Community College to provide county residents with post graduate educational services.

Scoping Meeting  on Rosemont Copper project canceled in Patagonia

Last January the Pima County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution (2007-15) opposing the proposed Rosemont Mine. In February of 2007 the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors sent a letter to Augusta Resources Corp., the project developer, supporting Pima County's resolution.

Area residents attended a meeting in Patagonia on March 20th and after an attempt by members of the public to change the meeting format, the meeting was canceled. Area residents have expressed to me their frustration with the USFS meeting format which they feel precludes meaningful dialogue betwen the public and the USFS.

I contacted Rep Giffords office the morning after and asked for the formation of a working group, with all parites represented, to develop a more "open" meeting format to solicit public input.

Deadline for property tax appeals is  April 29th

Earlier this month I received my tax valuation notice for our home for the year 2009. It increased this year. County residents have the right to ask for a review of their property values, but must file their paper work with the county Assessor's office by Tuesday, April 29th.

You can contact their office at 375-8030 and ask for the appeal forms to be mailed directly to you.

If you are not satisfied with the review by the county Assessor's staff, you have the right to appeal to the Board of Equalization in the fall.
